Ever had a frustrating sewing day?
September 6, 2008
Ever had those days when using one of your attachments and things just didn't go as planned? Maybe you are just learning how to use a particular one, or ready to use one on that new garment you are making? Yep, that happens and it happens to the best of us.
I have been sewing for years (ok, eons) and using the attachments very comfortably. Well, back to the drama of sewing. I had one of those days. I pulled out my 1/8" hemmer foot and was ready to go. Checked my tension, threading, and all was well for the new piece of fabric. I did take my own advice (thankfully!!) to test the attachment BEFORE beginning the hem on my new skirt.
That is when things started going downhill for quite a while. For some reason, I just couldn't get a straight line any longer than about 5 inches. Not good. I adjusted the amount of fabric in the hemmer - a little better but still not perfect at the end of my seam. I rechecked my threading and tension. Still OK.
After about 40 minutes, my trash can was getting pretty full. Nicely colored, but FULL!
I took a deep breath, walked around the sewing table a few times to clear the head, went back and read my personal instructions for using the hemmer foot and tried again. This time I had what I thought was a very scant bit of fabric rolled over the hemmer scroll. SUCCESS!
I then began to sew a felled seam with the hemmer and YAHOO!! it was perfect the entire length of the fabric. What a tiny hem it was! I had forgotten how small an amount of fabric the hemmer needs to produce that tiny, perfect hem.
So, I cleared all off my sewing table and began the hemming of my skirt. Yes, I did keep my toes crossed the entire time. Using the sewing machine attachments take time to learn. Remember to be easy on yourself and always think of my trash can - full of mistakes. Mistakes that are ready to be successes! It does take time and practice. Lots of practice.
I love a true challenge, especially when it comes to using my sewing attachments. If you read the earlier post, you saw my trash basket of errors. At times it can get pretty full and, yes, it will be frustrating.
What are some of your frustrations? I would love you to send me your thoughts and I will respond with some tips and hints.
Which attachment do you find the hardest to use?
Which attachment are you most disappointed with?
Which one will you never be without?
I love hearing from you and maybe these prompts will help. Send a comment or thought.
Happy Sewing! Charlene
